What Causes Vaginal Odor? Understanding unusual vaginal odor

Vaginal odor is something many women notice at different points in life. Most of the time, the scent comes from normal vaginal secretions (discharge), which help protect the vagina, support lubrication, and maintain a healthy balance of bacteria.

However, when the vaginal microbiome is disrupted or an infection develops, the odor may change.

Generally, vaginal odor falls into two categories:
• Physiological odor (normal)
• Pathological odor (potentially related to an underlying issue)
Recognizing the difference can help you understand when the body is simply shifting — and when it may be time to speak with a healthcare provider.

1. Normal Vaginal Odor

• Everyday Natural Scent
Normal discharge, combined with sweat and natural moisture, creates a mild scent that varies from woman to woman. After exercise or sweating, the odor may temporarily become stronger, but it typically fades after bathing. This is considered completely normal.

• Odor During Your Period
It’s also common to notice a distinct smell during menstruation. Period blood contains: Endometrial tissue, Vaginal secretions, and A small amount of natural skin oils
These can create a slightly metallic or musky odor. Maintaining good hygiene and changing pads or tampons regularly usually keeps the odor from becoming strong or unpleasant.

2. Abnormal Vaginal Odor: When to Consider Medical Care

Changes in odor—especially when combined with unusual discharge or discomfort—may suggest that the vaginal environment is disrupted. Several types of odor may point to different types of imbalance--and each condition requires a different type of care.

• A Noticeable “Fishy” Odor
A strong, fish-like smell is often associated with bacterial overgrowth conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV). BV is one of the most common causes of altered odor and occurs when vaginal bacteria fall out of balance.
Women may also notice: Itching or irritation, Burning, Increased moisture

• A Strong, Unpleasant, or Sharp Odor
A pungent or offensive odor, sometimes described as “foul” or “rank,” can sometimes be associated with infections from anaerobic bacteria or trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection. Discharge changes and irritation may accompany the odor.

• A Severe, Foul Odor
A very strong, lingering odor may be associated with more serious reproductive tract issues, including advanced infections or, in rare cases, certain gynecological conditions.
These types of odors should be evaluated by a healthcare provider promptly to determine the underlying cause.

Because these symptoms can overlap, self-diagnosis is often inaccurate. Odor alone cannot reliably distinguish BV from yeast infection or an STI. A healthcare provider can make a clear diagnosis using simple tests such as a vaginal swab, pH assessment, microscopy, or culture, which helps ensure you receive the right treatment.
If you notice a new, persistent, or unusual odor along with discomfort, itching, or changes in discharge, it’s a good idea to get checked. A clear diagnosis helps avoid unnecessary treatments, prevents symptoms from lingering, and ensures that the underlying cause is correctly addressed. Recognizing changes in your body is important — and getting a proper evaluation is the most supportive next step for your health.

How to Support a Healthy Vaginal Microbiome

A balanced vaginal microbiome is typically rich in Lactobacillus species, which help maintain a naturally acidic pH and create an environment where beneficial bacteria can thrive. Harsh products like douches can interrupt the natural balance, while a woman’s probiotic offers a gentler way to help maintain healthy bacteria and keep things feeling fresh and comfortable. Many women choose to support this balance with daily probiotics formulated for women, particularly those containing Lactobacillus crispatus or Lactobacillus rhamnosus—two strains studied for their role in supporting vaginal and urinary tract health.*

G-Serene features the Grisso Probiotic Blend, delivering 100 billion CFUs and including women's health strains such as L. Crispatus, L. Rhamnosus, L. Gasseri, L. Casei, and L. Acidophilus, along with prebiotic fiber and postbiotics. This formula is designed to support a healthy vaginal microbiome, pH balance, and overall microbial harmony as part of a daily wellness routine.*
